Chloe is a researcher in Food and Microbial Sciences at the University of Reading, UK. Chloe’s research focuses on the gut microbiota of weaning piglets and the interaction of gut bacteria via metabolite production and its effects on host immunity. She will share her academic experiences, research journey and acquired skills.

The report focuses on post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD), a major welfare and economic problem in pig farming. As traditional treatments like antibiotics and zinc oxide are strictly restricted in the EU without definitive alternatives, her current research explores innovative preventatives for PWD. It investigates whether reduced dietary iron can foster beneficial gut microbiota, optimize metabolite production and enhance piglets’ immunity, with relevant research data and future prospects to be presented.
